The Economist article reviewed a math-heavy paper positing that email scammers use over-the-top scam 'formats' to weed out people who are scam-proofed and so not worth pursuing. Interesting if unconvincing. I don't share the reviewer's scorn for victims, although it's tiresome to keep telling people "yes it's a scam." Yes! It's a scam!
