Club Chicxulub recording of The Dweeb Goes Home now online

Club Chicxulub hosts readings of stories read with live musical accompaniment!

The September show was held at Deco Dance Bar in San Francisco.

I read my story The Dweeb Goes Home, from The Dweeb Chronicles, which relate the misadventures of an alien exo-musicologist marooned on a hostile planet called Earth.

My bit starts 18:30 minutes in   :)

Nevermore

I tell myself the 'stay in' COVID guidelines are not so bad - a writer mostly stays in, anyway.

But then I took a stab at embryonic animation, and now I wonder if staying in is affecting my brain...

Anyway, Poe should have just lobbed a paperweight at the bird, is my feeling.

Etheria 2018

Another great Etheria film festival has come and gone, celebrating women in genre film.

Lori Petty presented this year's Inspiration award, appropriately, to Rachel Talalay, with moving speeches from both. It was a perfect moment and got standing ovations.

Etheria offers networking for women involved in any aspect of genre film, above or below the line.  I've attended ever since my film "Shelter" was on the Etheria tour.

It was preceded by an excellent panel discussion and dinner with Women In Media, raising money for the Stephanie Rothman Fellowship, which was awarded at the Etheria screening. Women in Media's goal is to get women hired into below-the-line jobs in film.

As an extra treat, I met Lloyd (Long live the Toxic Avenger) AND Patricia Kaufman (formerly of the New York film commission). Such lovely people!

Weird Film Fest April 2 a success

The spring screening of the Weird Film Fest went smoothly and well at its new,  comfy quarters - PianoFight theater in downtown San Francisco.

This spring's program included films from Canada, France, Spain, Australia and the US of A, and a Q&A with filmmaker Devlin Clark, whose film "Heartless" - about a robot whose only friends in a hostile world are a trio of musical spheres - was full of heart.

Weird Film will return at Halloween time!

James Udom, a gift to playwrights

If there's any justice in the world (and occasionally there is), James Udom will have a long and fulfilling acting career.
Recently I've been reminded of my good fortune in meeting him.
Four years on from his stunning portrayal (really, creation of) Freddy in a first outing of my play Scamoramaland (boy, was I lucky), James has gone on to work off-Broadway and then to Yale Drama School, from which he will graduate in 2018.
Film and theater world, take note of a very fine actor!

2018 update: James is in his third and final year at Yale Drama School and has received the Princess Grace Award!

2018 update deux: James was in town to play the lead role in the A.C.T. production of Suzan-Lori Parks's "Father Comes Home From the Wars". He's graduated from Yale and is making his mark!

Interview with Horror Happens Radio

Recently I had the pleasure of being interviewed once again by Jay Kay of Horror Happens Radio, which he and The Beast produce out of their bunker.
Jay Kay is a real scholar and supporter of genre media of all kinds. An interview with him feels like an effortless magic carpet ride, a conversation in a bar, something you don't want to end.
Check out his link on Sound Cloud (above) to get a sense of the sheer volume and breadth of his coverage (it ain't a plug for me, that will go up on his site eventually but not yet).

SF Olympians 2018

I've been commissioned to write a short play for the 2018 SF Olympians Festival.
My subject is Quirinus, protector of the Roman state and god of lawyers.
He wields a mighty suitcase and has a secret grudge against Orpheus.
A first draft feels coherent - there's something there - looking forward to joining the ranks of the Olympians in 2018!

"DONE" plays at Piano Fight

Just finished a run of my short piece "DONE" as part of May's Pint-Size Plays at Piano Fight, San Francisco's gem of theater.

The wonderful people who made it happen were:
Sophie Nelson -- The Customer
Ayelet Firstenberg - The "Security" Consultant
LeeAnn Dowd - The Director (actually!)

The read-throughs at the Berkeley Rep back office space (and fantastic costume shop!) were a pleasure, and the performances were each different and excellent.
